Career Start
Hands-on experience, industry training, and government-funded support.
Career Start supports eligible Queenslanders to start their career, develop new skills, or move into more secure, full-time employment. Through an employment-based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway, you'll gain practical, on-the-job experience while completing a nationally recognised qualification. With reduced-cost, entry-level training aligned to current industry needs, Career Start provides a practical pathway to building the skills employers are looking for and achieving long-term career success.

What you'll gain

Eligibility criteria
- Currently employed as a Queensland apprentice or trainee under a registered training contract in an eligible qualification
- Not currently enrolled in another qualification
- Not a school student
- Not exceeded a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships/traineeships in a 10-year period
Student Contribution Fees: Trainees & Apprenticeships
Government funding doesn't cover the full cost of training. Student contribution fees represent the non-government financial contribution to the cost of training and assessment services provided by ABHT.

Career Start: General Training Pathway
The General Training Pathway is designed for anyone ready to take their first step into the workforce. This government-funded pathway focuses on giving you the skills, confidence, and support you need to get job-ready, without needing a current employer.
Who it's for
- School leavers preparing for their first job
- Job seekers building skills to enter the workforce
- Anyone wanting a strong foundation for traineeship or long-term role
Eligibility criteria
- Permanent Queensland resident
- Australian citizen, permanent resident (including humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with visa pathway, or NZ citizen
- Not currently enrolled in a qualification
- No prior Cert III or higher qualification within the last 10 years
- Not exceeded two government-funded apprenticeships/traineeships in a 10-year period
Co-Contribution Fees: General Training
Given the benefits training provides individuals, students undertaking Cert III level training and non-concessional students undertaking lower-level vocational training contribute to the cost through a co-contribution fee.
Career Boost
Already working or qualified? Step up with higher-level skills and training.
Career Boost helps you progress into advanced, supervisory, or management roles. Funded by the Queensland Government, this pathway delivers Certificate IV and Diploma-level qualifications across Hospitality, Cookery, Business and Retail.
What you get

Eligibility criteria
- Australian, NZ citizen, or Australian permanent resident
- Aged 15 or over
- Live in Queensland and have left school
- Don't hold a Cert IV or higher qualification (excluding qualifications completed at school and foundation skills)
- Not currently enrolled in another qualification (excluding foundation skills)
Co-Contribution Fees: Career Boost
Given the increased benefits of higher-level training, students contribute through a co-contribution fee. The fee may be paid by an employer or third party but cannot be paid or waived by the training provider unless approved by the Department.

School-Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships
Kickstart your career while still in high school.
School-based programs let you mix part-time work with formal training, gaining practical experience in a real workplace while working toward a nationally recognised qualification. By graduation, you'll have your high school diploma and valuable industry experience, giving you a strong advantage whether you continue working, pursue further training, or explore higher education.
School-Based Apprenticeships
Spend part of your week learning the ropes in a real workplace. From knife skills to plating dishes, you're working alongside chefs and earning a nationally recognised qualification while still at school.
School-Based Traineeships
Combine part-time work with formal training in retail, business, hospitality, or other industries. Build professional skills, earn money, and graduate with both your diploma and industry experience.

- Students must have school support and parental permission (if under 18)

Queensland Government Funding
Australian Business & Hospitality Training (ABHT) is a Queensland Government Skills Assure Supplier approved to deliver selected subsidised training programs.
Government funding helps reduce the cost of training for eligible students. Funding is only available to students who meet the eligibility requirements of the relevant Queensland Government program.
Eligibility
Eligibility for government-funded training depends on the specific funding program and may include requirements relating to:
- Residency or citizenship status.
- Age.
- Employment status.
- Previous qualifications completed.
- Current apprenticeship or traineeship status (where applicable).
- Other Queensland Government eligibility criteria.
Eligibility must be confirmed by ABHT before enrolment or commencement.
Evidence Required Before Enrolment
Before enrolling in a government-funded course, students must provide evidence to confirm their eligibility. This may include:
- Proof of identity.
- Evidence of Queensland residency.
- Citizenship or visa documentation.
- Medicare card (where applicable).
- Evidence supporting concession eligibility (if applicable).
- Any additional documentation required by the relevant funding program.
Students cannot be confirmed as funded until all required evidence has been received and verified.
Funding Entitlement
Accessing a government-funded qualification or skill set may affect your future entitlement to access subsidised training under Queensland Government funding programs.

Concessional Student Fees
Some students may be eligible for a concessional student contribution fee under Queensland Government funding arrangements.
Evidence supporting concession eligibility must be provided before enrolment. Acceptable evidence may include a current Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or other documentation recognised under the applicable funding program.
