Career Start - Trainees and Apprenticeships

Start your career with hands-on experience, industry training, and government-funded support.

The Career Start Program helps you combine work and study through a traineeship or apprenticeship. Delivered by Australian Business & Hospitality Training (ABHT), this program is designed to help you gain practical skills while earning a wage and working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Who it’s for:

School leavers ready to launch their career

New employees starting out in the workplace

Businesses wanting to upskill their staff with structured training

Who is Eligible?

Eligible Students must meet the following criteria:

i. are currently employed as a Queensland apprentice or trainee (under a registeredtraining contract) in an eligible apprenticeship or traineeship Qualification through this Program;

ii. not currently be enrolled in a Qualification;

iii. not be a school student; and

iv. not exceed a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships/traineeshipswithin a 10-year period.

Student Contribution Fees

Please Note: The funding provided by Queensland Government doesn't cover the full cost of training. Student contribution fees are the non-government financial contribution to the cost of the training and assessment services provided by Australian Business & Hospitality Training.

Student Contribution fees under the Career Start pathway for Trainees and Apprenticeships are set at (non-concessional) $1.60 per nominal hour or (concessional) $1.12 for each unit of competency.

Career Start - General Training

The General Training Pathway of the Career Start Program is designed for anyone ready to take their first step into the workforce. Delivered by Australian Business & Hospitality Training (ABHT), this government-funded pathway focuses on giving you the skills, confidence, and support you need to get job-ready.

What you’ll gain:

Practical, entry-level skills in Hospitality, Commercial Cookery, Business, Retail, and Tourism

Confidence to succeed in interviews, the workplace, and beyond

Industry-aligned training so you’re learning what employers are really looking for

Support at every step from ABHT’s dedicated trainers and student services team

Who it’s for:

School leavers preparing for their first job

Job seekers looking to build skills to enter the workforce

Anyone wanting a strong foundation before stepping into a traineeship, apprenticeship, or long-term role

Who is Eligible?

Eligible Students must meet the following criteria:

i. be a permanent Queensland resident;

ii. be an Australian citizen, or Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), or temporary resident with the right visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen;

iii. not currently be enrolled in a Qualification;

iv. not have previously completed a certificate III or higher-level Qualification within the last 10 years for a general training pathway; and

v. not exceed a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships/traineeships within a 10-year period

Given the benefits that accrue to individuals from training, students undertaking certificate III level training and non-concessional students undertaking lower-level vocational training, will be required to contribute to the costs of their training through a co-contribution fee.

Already working or qualified, but ready for more? The Career Boost Program is your opportunity to step up with higher-level skills and training. Delivered by Australian Business & Hospitality Training (ABHT), and funded by the Queensland Government, Career Boost is designed to help you progress into advanced, supervisory, or management roles.

What the program offers:

Qualifications that boost your career — from Certificate IV to Diploma level in Hospitality, Commercial Cookery, Business, Retail, and Tourism

Specialised skills that employers need for leadership and growth roles

Flexible study options with support from ABHT’s experienced trainers

Clear career pathways beyond entry-level into long-term, rewarding careers

Who it’s for:

Employees wanting to progress into leadership positions

Apprentices/trainees who have completed entry-level training and want to advance

Job seekers with prior experience aiming to gain formal recognition through further training

Who is Eligible?

a) Australian, New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents

b) be 15 years old or over

c) live in Queensland and have left school

d) not hold a certificate IV or higher-level qualification, not including qualifications completed at school and foundation skills training; and

e) not be enrolled in another qualification, not including foundation skills training.

Co-Contribution Fee

Given the increased benefits that you can gain from higher-level training, you are required to contribute to the cost of your training through a co-contribution fee.

The fee may be paid on your behalf by an employer or another third party but cannot be paid or waived by the training provider, or any organisation related to the training provider, unless approved by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training.
