The ABHT difference

Deal directly with the people who issue your qualification

Most RPL businesses are brokers. They advertise a huge range of qualifications, but behind the scenes they hand your application to a third-party RTO you never actually deal with.

ABHT is different. We are the Registered Training Organisation. We deliver the training and we issue the qualification, so from your first phone call to the certificate in your hand, you deal with us and only us.

That means clearer advice, faster answers, experienced assessors who know these qualifications inside out, and complete confidence you're working directly with the training provider.

Broker / middleman
  • Passes you to a third-party RTO
  • Extra layer, extra hand-offs
  • You never meet your assessor
ABHT (the RTO)
  • We assess and issue it ourselves
  • One team, start to finish
  • Talk directly with your assessor
What is RPL?

Get formally recognised for what you already know

Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment pathway that converts the skills, knowledge and experience you've already built at work and in life into a nationally recognised qualification, without sitting through a full course. You gather evidence of what you can already do, an experienced ABHT assessor reviews it, and you're credited for it. It's the faster, more practical way to make your experience official.

How It Works

7 steps in the RPL assessment process

What happens at each stage of your RPL journey: your role, and what your assessor does. Step 6 only applies if there are gaps to fill.

Step 1: Application 1
You

Application

Complete the Candidate Application including the Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), provide your employment history (CV or resume) detailing your roles and responsibilities, and submit any relevant qualifications or licences via email to [email protected].

Your assessor

Based on this information, your assessor determines your eligibility and informs you by email.

Step 2: Get Ready 2
You

Get Ready

Complete the Document Portfolio as part of your documentary evidence. Provide evidence of your employment, skills, and experience via your student file, including documents such as employer letters and pay evidence.

Your assessor

Your assessor reviews your evidence. If satisfactory, you move to the next stage; if not, you may need to provide additional evidence within a specified timeframe.

Step 3: Competency Conversation 3
You

Competency Conversation

Have a chat with your assessor about your experience in more detail. Describe your existing knowledge and skills, share relevant documents, and answer questions related to each unit of competency. This interview is recorded.

Your assessor

Your assessor invites you to a competency conversation, uses a bank of questions and scenarios to check your experience against unit requirements, and plans your practical demonstration if needed.

Step 4: Practical Task Demonstration 4
You

Practical Task Demonstration

If needed, you show your assessor your skills by doing: performing the tasks needed to demonstrate your competency.

Your assessor

Your assessor contacts you about what they need to see you do, and when and where; then watches you perform the tasks, taking notes or recording.

Step 5: Third Party Reporting 5
You

Third Party Reporting

Provide your assessor with a completed report from a supervisor or workplace representative who can confirm your experience, knowledge, and skills.

Your assessor

Your assessor provides the report document for your supervisor to complete, then contacts them to chat about their report.

Step 6: Filling Gaps (optional) 6
You

Filling Gaps (optional)

You might do some training to fill in any gaps in your experience.

Your assessor

Your assessor lets you know if there are any gaps in your experience, skills, or knowledge, and what training or additional evidence is required.

Step 7: Get Qualified 7
You

Get Qualified

Your RPL process is finalised: get qualified!

Your assessor

Your assessor finalises the RPL process, notifies you of the outcome, and certifies you for the relevant units of competency.

Common questions

RPL, answered simply

What exactly is Recognition of Prior Learning?
RPL is a formal assessment of the skills and knowledge you already have, gained through work, training or life experience, against a nationally recognised qualification. If your experience meets the requirements, you're credited for it and receive the qualification without repeating study you don't need.
How is ABHT different from other RPL providers?
Many RPL websites are brokers that pass your application to a separate RTO. ABHT is the Registered Training Organisation. We assess your evidence and issue the qualification ourselves, so you deal directly with us from your first enquiry through to your certificate.
What evidence do I need to provide?
Typically a mix of things like your work history and references, examples of your work (photos, videos or documents), position descriptions, and sometimes a short conversation with an assessor. Don't worry about getting it perfect, we guide you through exactly what to collect for your qualification.
How long does the process take?
It depends on the qualification and how quickly you can gather your evidence, but RPL is usually much faster than completing a full course. After your free eligibility check we'll give you a realistic timeframe for your situation.
What if I have gaps in my experience?
That's completely normal. If your evidence doesn't quite cover everything, our assessors can identify the gaps and we can help you close them with some targeted training, so you still finish with a full qualification.
Is the qualification the same as if I studied the course?
Yes. It is the same nationally recognised qualification, issued by ABHT (RTO #31983) and recognised across Australia. RPL simply changes how your competence is assessed, not the value of the qualification you receive.
